RAINN provides services to victims of sexual violence; educates the public; and leads national efforts to prevent sexual violence and bring rapists to justice.
Thoughts on RAINN by Grammy Nominee Betty Wright
The importance of RAINN is beyond words. RAINN is an advocate for those victims who are sexually abused. They are the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. Domestic violence can lead to other forms of abuse including sexual assault and I believe it is just as important, if not more so, to provide guidance and support for those victims. I believe hurt people, hurt other people, so we want to rid the planet of this disease before it effects the next generation.
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE and the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at rainn.org, and publicizes the hotline’s free, confidential services; educates the public about sexual violence; and leads national efforts to prevent sexual violence, improve services to victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
- 1. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE. This nationwide partnership of more than 1,100 local rape crisis centers provides victims of sexual violence with free, confidential services around the clock. The hotline has helped more than 1.5 million people since it began in 1994.
- 2. In 2006, RAINN launched the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, the nation’s first secure web-based hotline. The Online Hotline provides live and completely confidential help to victims through an interface as intuitive as instant messaging. The Online Hotline was awarded the prestigious Technology Innovation Award by NPower and Accenture for being the most innovative use of technology by a nonprofit.
- 3. RAINN educates more than 120 million Americans each year about sexual violence. Extensive entertainment industry relationships allow RAINN to reach millions of Americans each month with important information about sexual violence prevention, recovery, and prosecution. In addition, RAINN uses its community partnerships to put critical information into the hands of young women and men at concerts, on campus and in communities. RAINN also publicizes the hotlines’ free, confidential services and leads national efforts to improve services to victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
- 4. RAINN leads national efforts to improve sexual violence laws and policies. RAINN leaders have testified to Congress on issues ranging from DNA to sexual violence in the military, and are regularly consulted by members of Congress, state legislators and others working to improve the system. Most notably, RAINN built support for and helped pass the Debbie Smith Act, which is considered the most important anti-rape legislation ever passed by Congress and is expected to help solve tens of thousands of open rape cases.
